A Custom Air Vent for the GT86 Facelift – Built for Style and Function
When I first got my facelift GT86, the stock air vents quickly became an annoyance. They lacked a closure mechanism, looked a bit outdated, and aftermarket solutions didn’t cut it. So, I took matters into my own hands—designing and 3D printing a custom air vent that not only fixes these issues but adds a premium, OEM-plus touch to the interior.

From Idea to Reality: The Design Process
The goal was simple: improve airflow control, modernise the look, and ensure durability. The challenge? Car interiors get hot—too hot for standard 3D printing plastics like PLA, which warps at around 60°C. Instead, I used ASA, an automotive-grade plastic known for its heat resistance (105°C+), UV stability, and durability—ideal for long-term use in a car.
With 3D printing, I could refine the design through multiple prototypes, adjusting for perfect fitment, smooth operation, and a factory-like finish. The vent clips in seamlessly, functions just like the OEM part, and even features a subtle texture to match the GT86’s dashboard styling.
How It Stacks Up Against Stock and Aftermarket Options
Stock Vent – No airflow shut-off, silver trim can be distracting in sunlight, and lacks a premium feel.
Aftermarket Solutions – Mostly cosmetic add-ons like vent rings or carbon overlays—no real functional improvement.
Custom Vent – Full airflow control, a clean all-black design, and built with heat-resistant materials to withstand daily use.
Final Thoughts: The Power of DIY
This project turned a minor annoyance into a rewarding hands-on upgrade. The vent has been in my car for months now, holding up perfectly in all conditions. It blends seamlessly with the interior, adds functionality, and best of all—it’s something completely unique.
If you’ve ever looked at a part of your car and thought, “I wish this was better,”—chances are, you can make it happen. Sometimes, the best modifications are the ones built out of necessity.
